Presidents and Vice Presidents from various universities around China gathered at UIC to discuss “the Opportunities and Challenges of Sino-Foreign Cooperative University in New Period” at The 5th Council Meeting of Sino-Foreign Cooperative University Union and The Sino-Foreign Cooperative University Presidents Forum on 25 September 2019.

UIC hosted this year's forum

Founded in 2014 and directed by the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education, the Sino-Foreign Cooperative University Union consists of nine members: the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC), Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, New York University Shanghai, Duke Kunshan University, Wenzhou-Kean University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, and Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

The Union synergises efforts of Sino-foreign/Mainland-SAR cooperative institutions to address common problems and solutions that serve China’s higher education reform.

As it was UIC’s turn to be the Secretariat of the Union, UIC President Prof Tang Tao began the forum by welcoming the guest speakers and participants at this year’s forum.

Vice Mayor of Zhuhai Mr Yan Wu then addressed the audience, highlighting the achievements of UIC over the past 15 years and how the college became a “shining brand” of Zhuhai’s higher education.

The first speaker was former Vice Minister of Education of PRC and Chairman of the Chinese Society of Vocational and Technical Education Prof Lu Xin. She illustrated the improvement of China’s education with solid statistics, before calling for talent education to meet the needs of the time.

Prof Lu was followed by the speakers including Vice-Provost of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China Prof Sam Shen, Vice President of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Prof Chao Qiuling, Associate Vice Chancellor of New York University Shanghai Dr Ding Shuzhe, Vice Chancellor for Government Relations of Duke Kunshan University Dr Chang Xiaolin, Party Secretary as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wenzhou-Kean University Mr Wang Beijiao, Vice President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen Prof Zhu Shiping, and Vice President (Academic Affairs) of UIC Prof Chen Zhi.

UIC’s Vice President (Students and General Affairs) Prof Zhang Cong then concluded the Forum by stressing that fostering talents is always the core of university education.

"We look forward to further developing ideas, integrating resources, and strengthening cooperation in the future," Prof Zhang added.

 

New college periodical

Also at the forum, members were presented with a new college periodical called ‘Innovative Teaching and Learning’. This periodical showcases the pioneering pedagogy applied and developed by UIC’s staff members.
