Nobel Prize winner and scholars on financial technology and digital economy at UIC

An international conference focusing on artificial intelligence, blockchain and financial technology of the Greater Bay Area was held at UIC from 15 to 16 April 2023, together with the annual meeting of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) Activity Group on Financial Technology and Algorithm.

World-class researchers and scholars, including the 2005 Nobel Prize Winner for Economics Prof Robert John Aumann, were invited to the conference. Prof Aumann has been appointed as the Honourary Professor by UIC.

The conference was a platform for domestic and international elites from academia, government, and industry to share their views on the latest developments in artificial intelligence, blockchain and financial technology. It attracted over 1800 audience members online and offline this year.

UIC President, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences Prof Tang Tao said UIC will further leverage the advantages of joint universities between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong in talent cultivation, focus on cutting-edge technologies, and contribute to the development of the Greater Bay Area.

Keynote speeches and seminars were arranged during the conference, presenting fresh ideas and insights while inspiring all attendees.

Prof Robert John Aumann delivered a speech on artificial intelligence (AI) and natural intelligence (NI), and he believed the distinction of the use of emotion between AI and NI could explain the origin of the evolution of human consciousness. He also expressed his gratitude towards UIC for the conferment.

Prof Georgios Theodoropoulos from the Southern University of Science and Technology shared his opinions on blockchain systems, and he proposed a possible approach to manage blockchain systems dynamically using digital twins.

Prof He Jia from Shandong University focused on the regulations of Internet financial platforms in his speech, and he pointed out that it is vital for Internet finance to update its regulations instantly while predicting various scenarios.

Prof Chen Junlong from the South China University of Technology presented his views on the ChatGPT, and said that it is a hybrid augmented intelligence application for human-computer interaction, projecting a future direction for the development of the digital economy.

Many industrial professionals and academics joined to discuss the development of financial technology and the economy in the Greater Bay Area from academic and policy perspectives.
