Scholars and experts gather at UIC to share insights into maths education

The first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Mathematics Education Forum was held at UIC and Beijing Normal University Zhuhai on 13 and 14 May 2023. Mathematicians, education specialists and over 400 high school teachers from all over China gathered to discuss mathematics education and talent cultivation.

UIC President, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences Prof Tang Tao said that in the era of artificial intelligence, as a fundamental and cutting-edge discipline, mathematics has profoundly affected our production and lifestyle, and it is urgent to popularise mathematical culture and education. He hoped this forum could promote the practical development of mathematics education in the Greater Bay Area.

Deputy Director of the Management Committee and Vice President of Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai Yu Lihong expected that through communication among scholars and experts, the forum could better enhance the teaching quality of maths in the Greater Bay Area.

The forum contained multiple sessions, including presentations by invited scholars, sub-forum presentations, a high-table dinner, and workshops to delve into maths-related issues.

Scholars shared their insights into maths education nationwide during the presentation, including Prof Frederick K. S. Leung from the University of Hong Kong, Dr Jiang Chunlian from the University of Macau, Prof Lin Yanan from Xiamen University and UIC, and Prof Liu Jianya from Shandong University. Prof Tang was invited as well.

The guests were also invited to a high table dinner, where Prof Tang lectured on liberal arts education and introduced UIC's future development plan. He specially mentioned the second-phase campus, which will support the scientific research of the College.
