The UIC Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) inauguration ceremony was held at UIC's second-phase campus on 15 April 2024. Prof Tang Tao, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of TWAS, was appointed its director.

UIC IAS is a milestone positioned to drive cutting-edge research and innovation. Drawing on high-calibre talents from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering as well as UIC's resources, IAS is set to energise research collaborations, creative answers and cross-disciplinary approaches. It aims to build UIC into a vibrant academic body that provides solutions to significant societal challenges and inspires the community at large.

Mr Huang Zhihao delivered a speech and expressed hope that UIC could continue to generate power for Zhuhai's growth and contribute to the in-depth cooperation among all parties in the Greater Bay Area.

Member of CAS, Director of Beijing International Centre for Mathematical Research, and Head of Preparation for the University of the Greater Bay Area, Prof Tian Gang said talents are crucial to the Institute. He expected it would leverage the development of the Greater Bay Area.

UIC President and Fellow of HKAH, Prof Chen Zhi, said that UIC has achieved remarkable results in both academic research and talent cultivation after 19 years of development. He looked forward to IAS technological breakthroughs and contributions to promote economic development in the future.

Prof Tang Tao said he expected IAS to be a world-renowned institute of higher education, attracting and gathering top global research talents, and promoting interdisciplinary and cross-field cooperation while standing at the forefront of science with focuses on issues including artificial intelligence.

Later, scholars and experts were invited to attend a keynote speech themed on interdisciplinary study in the age of AI, given by Member of CAS, Prof E Weinan, and a lecture of the Huitong Lecture Series themed on Sanxingdui, given by Prof Gao Dalun of Shanxi Univerisity. A heritage photography exhibition was held for guests to experience the charm of interdisciplinary cooperation.
