Published on 25 October 2024

UIC organised its 15th International Postgraduate Education Information Fair on 25 October 2024. Over 50 universities and institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, and Australian National University, which are among the top 100 universities in QS rankings, were present.

UIC President and Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities Prof Chen Zhi welcomed the attendees. He said that this Fair provided a platform for the renowned universities to guide students from UIC and other universities in their postgraduate decisions, while strengthening intercultural communication.

Ms Joy Liu has represented the University of Warwick to participate in the Fair for the second time, and she expressed anticipation for closer collaboration between the two institutions.

"UIC is well known for its excellent education and commitment to developing well-rounded students," she said. "I believe that the exceptional achievements of UIC students, combined with the global opportunities offered by Warwick, will help the students achieve even more in the future."

Johns Hopkins University School of Education has also joined the Fair for the second time. "Every year, we welcome UIC students to our campus. Thanks to UIC's English teaching environment, they usually adapt well to the language and cultures," shared representative Julie Xu.

As for application preparation, she advised students to improve their GPA and language scores while solidifying their practical abilities. She also reminded students not to rely heavily on social media for graduate programme selection; instead, they should utilise official university websites and webinars for reliable information and direct interaction with admission officers and alumni.

Also exhibiting for the second time was the Australian National University (ANU), and the representative of the institution, Ms Vera Wang, expressed her expectations. "We hope that through direct and effective communication with students, students will have a more and more comprehensive understanding of ANU."

Meanwhile, Ms Wang suggested students choose postgraduate programmes based on their personal interests and social needs. When clarifying their career plans, they can decide the directions for their in-depth study and lay a good foundation for future development.

Representing the University of Glasgow this time was a UIC student of the Class of 2023, Li Younan. As a representative of Glasgow, she advised students to take every item on their transcript seriously, clarify academic interests and career goals, and choose postgraduate programmes closely related to their academic background and future development.

As a UIC alumna, she hoped that students would remain calm during their preparation and follow their passions. "Thank all the teachers who helped you in the past four years, and also thank yourself, who may take a break from time to time, but always works hard," she added.

Serving as a bridge linking the top universities with potential candidates, many UIC students found the Fair useful.

A UIC third-year student of the Department of Computer Science, Zhi Xiwen, attended the Fair with her mother to communicate directly with officers from other institutions. "UIC provides us with an English teaching environment, and I would like to know whether there will be any policies favouring this; moreover, we are also concerned about the university rankings and the major rankings," she said.

For those who are still exploring their directions, like UIC third-year student Zheng Wei of the Department of Management, this Fair provided him with a lot of timely information. "The representatives gave me a lot of valuable advice for cross-disciplinary applications, which is very helpful for my future plan," he said.

In recent years, over 80% of UIC undergraduates who confirmed placement have opted for further studies abroad, with over 80% being admitted to the world's top 100 universities.
