BNBU celebrates 20th anniversary with visit from HKSAR Secretary for Education

Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) welcomed Dr Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR, to its 20th anniversary celebration on 14 April 2025.

Dr Choi extended her warm congratulations to the university, noting its adoption of the undergraduate curriculum and academic assessment system of Hong Kong universities, setting a successful example for the joint provision of education services between the Mainland and Hong Kong.

She also highlighted the active presence of Hong Kong universities in the Greater Bay Area and the importance of multilateral and interdisciplinary cooperation in driving scientific development, knowledge transfer, and innovation. The HKSAR Government, she said, will continue to support higher education partnerships across the region.

At the event, BNBU President Prof Chen Zhi highlighted the university's steadfast commitment to liberal arts and whole-person education. Over the past two decades, BNBU has developed an interdisciplinary and values-driven education model, nurturing more than 20,000 students with both national pride and a global perspective. The university plays a key role in supporting Hong Kong's integration with Mainland development and serves as a model for diversifying higher education in China. Looking ahead, BNBU aims to strengthen research in emerging technologies, advance interdisciplinary studies, and promote traditional Chinese culture, with the goal of becoming a world-class liberal arts university.

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) President Prof Alexander Wai noted that education is the driving force of social progress, and talent mobility is essential for the development of the Greater Bay Area. Over the past 20 years, BNBU has successfully combined Hong Kong's internationalised education strengths with resources from Zhuhai, becoming a key hub for cross-border talent development. Looking to the future, HKBU and BNBU will continue to collaborate in areas such as data economy and smart healthcare, promoting research innovation, real-world impact, and the cultivation of responsible and forward-looking talent.

During the ceremony, key representatives, including Dr Choi, Prof Wai, Prof Chen and senior management from the Zhuhai government, HKBU and BNBU jointly unveiled the plaque for the School of AI and Liberal Arts.

The new school represents a bold step into interdisciplinary education, with a mission to cultivate students who combine AI competency with humanistic literacy, grounded in the values of innovation, ethics, and global vision.

The day also marked the launch of the Yuzhen Jinsheng YaYue Orchestra world tour: Jade Melody and Bronze Chime. As the first student group in South China dedicated to reviving ancient Chinese court music, the ensemble has previously appeared on national media and performed across the region. The tour begins on 19 April 2025 in Zhuhai and will continue in the US, with performances in Boston and New York.
