Stanford University scholars released a list of the World's Top 2% Scientists 2020 and seven UIC scholars were selected. Among them, UIC President and Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof Tang Tao, Vice President (Research and Development) and Dean of Graduate School Prof Jia Weijia, Prof Wang Qing-Guo from Computer Science and Technology Programme and Prof Xu Baojun from Food Science and Technology of Division of Science and Technology entered both lists of career-long impact and single year impact. In addition, Prof Wang Tian and Prof Yu Hongnian from the Computer Science and Technology Programme and Associate Professor Cang Shuang from the Statistics Programme of Division of Science and Technology entered the single year impact list.
The list selected the top 2% from nearly 7 million scientists worldwide from 176 sub-disciplines under 22 fields in arts, science and engineering. The result indicates that the seven selected UIC scholars have made a high world impact in their research fields and outstanding contributions to those fields.
Tang Tao

Prof Tang Tao, chair professor and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, obtained his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Peking University in 1984, followed by a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Leeds in 1989. Prof Tang Tao’s research works in the field of Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing has demonstrated both remarkable depth and breadth. They have profound impact on the understanding of numerical schemes for hyperbolic equations, such as monotone schemes, fractional step methods, adaptive meshing method, spectral method.
The awards and honours that he has received include the Membership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017, Fellow of American Mathematical Society in 2017, Fellow of SIAM in 2012, the State Natural Science Award of China in 2016, the Changjiang Chair Professorship by the Ministry of Education of China in 2005, Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing in 2003, and the Leslie Fox Prize for Numerical Analysis in 1988. He gave an invited lecture at International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 2018.
Jia Weijia

Prof Jia Weijia, chair professor (Artificial Intelligence, 5G Internet of Things, Edge Computing), obtained his Doctorate of Science from the Polytechnic Faculty of Mons, Belgium. He has served as the Zhiyuan Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Chair Professor of the University of Macau and the Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City. Prof Jia Weijia is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and a distinguished member of the China Computer Federation (CCF).
Prof Jia has a high reputation in areas such as cyberspace entity object sensing, AI and big data, next-generation networking and communications. He also has participated in projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, as well as presiding over many Hong Kong and Macao science funds and applied R&D funds.
Wang Qing-Guo

Prof Wang Qing-Guo, chair professor, was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National University of Singapore from 1992 to 2015. He was a Distinguished Professor at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa from 2015 to 2020. Prof Wang holds an A-rating from the National Research Foundation of South Africa and is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. His research lies in Automation/AI, focusing on modelling, estimation, prediction, control, and optimisation.
Prof Wang has published seven research monographs and 350 technical papers in international journals, receiving nearly 19,000 citations with an h-index of 75 and i10-Index of 229. He was presented with the award of the most cited article of the top control journal Automatica in 2006-2010. In addition, he was on the Thomson Reuters list of the highly-cited researchers 2013 in Engineering (1 out of 250 worldwide). Prof Wang currently serves as the Executive Associate Editor of the International Society of Automation Journal and has supervised about 30 postdoctoral research fellows, about 40 PhD students and about 30 Master students.
Xu Baojun
Prof Xu Baojun, Programme Director of Food Science and Technology Programme of the Division of Science and Technology, a Doctoral Supervisor and Distinguished Scholar in Zhuhai, obtained his doctorate in Food Science from Chungnam National University in Korea. He gained his postdoctoral position at the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks in the US from 2005 to 2008, and at Purdue University in the US, from 2008 to 2009, and served as a research scientist at the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation. He won the UIC President's Award for Research in 2016 and the UIC President's Award for Service in 2020.
Prof Xu currently serves as the deputy editor-in-chief of Food Research International, deputy editor-in-chief of Food Science and Human Wellness, editor of special journals such as Antioxidants, and editorial board member of dozens of international academic journals such as Food Science & Nutrition. He has published more than 220 papers, including 190 papers published on SCI Journals, and has one invention patent authorised. His papers have received more than 9,450 times citations, with a single paper being cited 1046 times, and has four ESI Highly Cited Papers and two ESI Hot Papers.
Wang Tian

Prof Wang Tian obtained his Doctorate in Computer Science from City University of Hong Kong and is one of the first scholars to study edge computing in China. His research covers a wide range of topics, including the Internet of Things, Edge Computing, and Mobile Computing. Prof. Wang was supported by the "Hundred-Thousand-Ten Talent Project" and Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of Fujian Province. He was the chair of the China Computer Federation (CCF) Young Computer Scientists & Engineers Forum (Xiamen) from 2018-2019 and is currently a member of the CCF Internet of Things Technical Committee, CCF Pervasive Computing Technical Committee, and CCF Network and Data Communications Technical Committee.
Prof Wang Tian has published more than 200 papers in high-level journals and international conferences, including 20 IEEE/ACM Transactions papers, six CCF A papers, three ESI HOT papers, and two ESI HIGHLY cited papers (As the First Author). He has 27 patents and has managed three National Natural Science Projects and four provincial projects.
Yu Hongnian

Prof Yu Hongnian's research interests include Robotics and intelligent control; Applied Artificial intelligence, data analysis, data sciences with applications in digital healthcare and manufacturing systems; Applications of emerging technology, such as RFID, wireless technology, and manufacturing systems.
In recent years, Prof Yu has presided over and participated in more than 40 large-scale scientific research projects of the European Union fund, the engineering and physical sciences research council (UK), the royal society research fund (UK), and the higher education innovation fund (UK), etc. The projects worth more than 10 million British pounds and involve topics such as the combined adaptive and robust method of real-time control, the control theory of discrete event dynamic system, intelligent automation, calculation and manufacturing. In addition, Prof Yu has supervised about ten postdoctoral research fellows, about 20 PhD students and about 20 Master students.
Cang Shuang

Having a teaching and research background in natural science and social science, Associate Prof Cang Shuang makes full use of her interdisciplinary expertise and advantages. She adopts management concepts and models and uses innovative calculation methods of artificial intelligence and data analysis to study medical health, quality of life index and e-tourism. She is mainly engaged in artificial intelligence, pattern recognition and computer software development, mathematics and statistical methods, and economic management. She was awarded as China's National High-end Foreign Expert, won awards from the 43rd Geneva International Exhibition of Invention, China Invention Association, and more.
Dr Cang Shuang has rich career experience in British government departments, industry and academia, and serves as the Chairman of the publishing and editorial board of international conferences. She obtained and managed more than six million euros of European Commission-funded projects as the principal or co-principal. In addition, Dr Cang has published many papers in international journals such as Expert Systems with Applications, Decision Support Systems, IEEE Journal of Biomedical & Health Informatics in natural sciences, and International Journal of Tourism Research and Tourism Economics in social sciences.
