President Tang Tao advises students on college life

On the afternoon of 22 September, the President of UIC and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof Tang Tao, gave the students a lecture on what kind of college life they need.

President Tang Tao explained that college life is different from high school and introduced UIC's educational philosophy, which integrates Chinese and western characteristics.

President Tang addressed the importance of using the college's resources, time management, sticking to professional training, and becoming a student with a global vision and deep understanding of the country. The lecture was live-broadcasted to multiple lecture halls.

President Tang first pointed out the difference between college life and high school. He encouraged students to step out of their comfort zone to explore more. In addition, college life is unique because it is a stage where marks the beginning of a person's independence in study and life and a golden period to absorb knowledge and enhance mindfulness.

President Tang also said that, as the first university jointly established by the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong, UIC does not simply copy the Western education model. It is also rooted in Chinese culture. UIC pays attention to the comprehensive development of students, which advocates giving students cross-cultural experience, cultivating a global vision, and striving to integrate Chinese traditional culture into the curriculum.

In addition, UIC has a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities. Thus, UIC allows students to emerge in Chinese culture and cultivate an identity from courses to student interest clubs. At the same time, it also enhances students' understanding of social responsibility through various social practices and volunteer activities.

President Tang believes that Zhuhai has a deep historical and cultural background and a long higher education history. In addition, some famous historical figures were related to Zhuhai, such as Yung Wing, Tong Kwo On, Tang Shaoyi, Tong King Sing, who made contributions to local cultural, educational, and business industries.

President Tang believes that UIC focuses on training talents in all fields. As a result, UIC graduates have excellent performance in science and technology, commerce, media, sports, film and television studies.

During the interactive session, the students actively asked President Tang questions regarding curriculum setting, unit transfer, and time management.

President Tang stated that the freshman year is also about adapting to college life. He explains that it requires students to spend a certain amount of time after class thinking about how to effectively master the content and key points of the course as well as balance the time between in-class learning and extracurricular activities. President Tang also emphasised the importance of after-class physical exercises. He said that the second phase campus currently under construction would further add sports facilities to provide more exercise options for staff and students.

Finally, President Tang wished students to make good use of the college's resources, enjoy the diversified and international environment, work on their academic performance and keep fit.
