Prof Douglas Kerr, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong, gave a lecture to a UIC audience on 7 May about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character Sherlock Holmes.
He stressed the practical influence of the biographical approach to literary analysis and drew attention to the fact that Sherlock Holmes is independent from Conan Doyle, even though the author is imprisoned by his creation to some degree.
He also noted that Sherlock Holmes’ investigation methods reflect the development of materialism and scientific thought during the Victorian era.
