Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) conferred an honorary doctoral degree (Doctor of Science, honoris causa) upon UIC Founding President Prof Ng Ching-Fai on 16 November for his outstanding professional achievements and remarkable contributions to society.

Prof Ng Ching-Fai is a superlative educator and humanist as well as a scholar of the highest order, who excels in public and political service.

As a renowned expert in heterogeneous catalysis and membrane science and technology, Prof Ng is highly regarded by both local and international peers. Prof Ng graduated from the University of Melbourne in Chemical Engineering and earned his PhD from the University of British Columbia.
Prof Ng joined the then Hong Kong Baptist College in 1985 as Head of the Department of Chemistry and was later Dean of Science. In 2001 he became President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. Under Prof Ng’s leadership, HKBU attracted a remarkable array of talents. His encouragement helped to bring about the formation of HKBU’s first Chinese Medicine programme, the only programme in Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine, the first BA/BEd double degree programme, Hong Kong’s first Academy of Visual Arts, and first and only Academy of Film.

Linked by the then vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, Prof Xu Jialu, and Prof Ng Ching-Fai, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC) was founded in 2005. Prof Ng Ching-Fai became the Founding President of UIC, the first full-scale cooperation in higher education between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong. Establishment of UIC is a remarkable pioneering endeavour, providing valuable experience for the recent profound interest on deep educational collaboration between a Mainland and a Hong Kong tertiary institution in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Prof Ng has also assumed an extraordinary range of public responsibilities. He was Member of the Preliminary Working Committee of the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong SAR of PRC, Member of Preparatory Committee of the HKSAR, Member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and Deputy to the National People’s Congress. He served on the Council of Advisors on Innovation and Technology, the ICAC Complaints Committee, the HKSAR Election Committee, and as a Director of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. In 2005, Prof Ng was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR.
