UIC Provost Prof Chen Zhi spoke of 'Xia And Ya: Seeking the Roots of Chinese Culture' at a lecture on 14 October. Citing an abundance of ancient books and archaeological evidence, he introduced the origin and development of concepts such as 'Huaxia' and 'China', as well as the formation and changes of Xia Dynasty and Ya, the culture of rites and music of Zongzhou.
Prof Chen's in-depth and lucid instructions help the students better understand the origin of Chinese culture. UIC Registrar Prof Li Jianhui moderated the lecture.

In the lecture, Prof Chen Zhi introduced the formation of the Chinese nation and the emergence of the concept of Huaxia, as well as differentiating many other ancient concepts and excavating their connotations in different dynasties.

Prof Chen pointed out that the distinction between the concept of Xia (China) and Yi had different standards in the Western Zhou Dynasty and the Spring and Autumn Period, including geography, ethnicity, culture, customs and politics, etc. This multi-level and multi-standard feature had a far-reaching impact on China.
During the question and answer session, the students actively asked about history and study, which Prof Chen responded to carefully. At the end of the lecture, many students continued to communicate with Prof Chen under the stage.

Li Chaoran and Yi Yangyu, Year One UIC students from Business Administration and the Applied Mathematics Programme, respectively, said that Prof Chen's lectures not only deepened their understanding of the history of Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasty but also aroused their keen interest in Chinese history and culture.
