Guest lecturer on fluid dynamics theories

Institute of Mathematical Research (IMR) and Division of Science and Technology (DST) invited Prof Zhang Qiang, who is a Professor of Mathematics at City University of Hong Kong, to give a lecture on 30 October.

Dean of the DST Prof Huang Huaxiong, welcomed and introduced Prof Zhang. His talk was titled ‘Recent Developments in Unstable Interfacial Fluid Mixing’. Prof Zhang received his PhD from New York University. Previously he has worked in the department of Economics and Finance at his current place of work and at the University of New York at Stony Brook.

Prof Zhang has previously conducted research in fluid dynamics, scientific computing, mathematical finance, granular materials and other areas of physics. Before starting his talk Prof Zhang said, “This is my first time here at UIC and I am extremely impressed with the facilities, the students and the faculty I have met so far.”

In his talk, Prof Zhang explained the different theories to predict the growth rates and amplitudes of unstable fingers. He said that his theories are applicable for compressible fluids, for systems with arbitrary density ratios, for arbitrary incident shock strength, and for entire time domain from early to late times.
