A team led by Assistant Professor of the Division of Business and Management (DBM) Dr Zhan Ge won the first place in the first AETA (a seismic monitoring system) AI Algorithm Competition for Earthquake Prediction in China. A total of 183 teams participated in the competition, and teams from Wuhan University, University of Tsukuba of Japan and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences also entered the finals.

The AETA AI Algorithm Competition for Earthquake Prediction was co-hosted by the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of Peking University, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Chinese Software Developer Network, and School of Computer Science of Wuhan University. It aims at further promoting innovation in the course of earthquake prediction. Among the 16 forecasts in the finals, Dr Zhan Ge's team made a hit rate of 75% in predicting whether the earthquake would occur.

In the competition, Dr Zhan Ge's team designed a variety of schemes and selected the most accurate one for prediction, such as using logical regression to judge whether there is an earthquake. During the whole competition, his team applied artificial intelligence (AI) and business intelligence technology to predict earthquakes. They used technologies such as Decision Tree and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), as well as referring to and integrating a variety of data, including the historical records of China Earthquake Networks Centre, etc.
Dr Zhan mentioned that their technology could help make early warnings incase of an earthquake, it could also be applied to the field of AI to study more cutting-edge projects, and to the classes to enrich the tools of data research.
At present, Dr Zhan Ge is continuing to develop AI algorithm for earthquake prediction with students from different divisions in UIC, hoping to further improve the prediction accuracy in the future.
Dr Zhan Ge is currently an Assistant Professor of Marketing Management Programme of DBM. He has a PhD in Marketing from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is a postdoctoral fellow from Shenzhen University.
