UIC's liberal arts education always pays attention to students' all-round development, keeps being student-oriented and helps students develop in all aspects. The college emphasises cultivating students' ability to seek certainty in uncertainties, and create opportunities to broaden their diversified horizons. Participating in professional competitions is an essential step for students to improve their real-life practice abilities and skills.
Recently there has been a lot of news from peers achieving awards in competitions such as game design, video advertising, mathematical modelling, shadow play, swimming, and qigong.
Game Design
In October this year, four fourth-year students majoring in Media Arts and Design Programme returned with good news from Tencent Youth Game Designer Challenge. Night in Tomb (Tan Mu Jing Hun), co-designed by Huang Junfeng and members from other colleges, won the Bronze Award; while Through the Night, Guo Yixun, Huang Junfeng, Zhang Jingjing, and Zheng Xuan won the Excellent Award and the Player's Choice Award.
Zheng Xuan summarised the experience by saying how they had met many capable peers through participating in the competitions, and they also regarded them as learning models.

Remembering the competition, the team said that they could experience the whole process of designing an Indie Game and meet many excellent partners. Through communication with other teams, they also gained more experience in game design.
Maths
In the 2020 Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modelling (CUMCM), 72 teams from UIC participated in this contest, among which 52 teams got awards, setting a new record high in UIC. Li Xinyue and Xu Bokai, majoring in Data Science and Xu Zimu from Computer Science and Technology, won the national Second Prize and the provincial First Award. The other two teams won the provincial First Award, nine teams got the provincial Second Award, 16 teams won the provincial Third Award, and 24 teams gained the provincial Successful Participants.
Xu Bokai explained how accumulation was significant because what his team and he learned before could be applied as the final solution to the problem.
Due to the pandemic, the contest was completed online. Xu Bokai and his team members also made efforts to smooth their teamwork and found an excellent topic. During the contest, they did not choose the topics that looked easy. Xu explained that although the topics were difficult, the algorithms they used were all known before, so the accumulation was significant because what they learned earlier could be applied as the final solution to the problem.
Video
Among the results recently announced by the Shanghai Students Television Festival Video Advertising Competition, three group works of the students from the Public Relations and Advertising Programme won the Excellence Award. Fourth-year students Gan Yueying, Huang Shuyao, Li Yitong, Zheng Bowen, Yang Zhuoyu, Tian Bingrui, Liu Xiaoke, Zhao Shiyu and Xie Yihong, as well as the 2020 graduates Chen Zhuo, and Huang Yuyang, all won awards in their respective groups. UIC also won the Outstanding Organisation Award.
Gan Yueying is one of the creating members of the work Housework Also Creates Value. She mentioned that teamwork is her most significant gain in the competition. She explains how they settled on the theme of housework. Also, the experience she got from understanding the interpretation methods has gone through a very long discussion. Finally presented it as an interview, which is familiar to the audience's life, and has aroused many viewers' resonances explained Yueying.

Qigong
The UIC Health Qigong Team achieved excellent results in the Health Qigong competition of Guangdong province held in December. The UIC team won first prizes in Qigong exercises in two team competitions: Five-Animal Exercises and Baduanjin Exercise.
Among the Health Qigong Team, two third-year students, Xin Shengyang (Statistics) and Zhang Wenbo (Applied Psychology) won the first place in two different events. In contrast, the second-year student Sun Yiyun (Accounting), and another third-year student Weng Huizhong (Cinema and Television), won second and fourth place in two other events.

When having an interview with ZHTV, Zhang Wenbo said that qigong emphasises a kind of righteous attitude and behaviour, which has also influenced their study and life attitude. They become accustomed to practising qigong, which can strengthen the body and benefit the mental health.
Swimming
UIC swimming team excelled with the team ranking the tenth in the province in Guangdong University Swimming Championship held in October. Chen Peizhu (second-year, Accounting), Zhong Xianxin (fourth-year, Finance), Gu Yuer (fourth-year, Cinema and Television) and Huang Guanni (second-year, Accounting), won the first place in the women's group A 4×50 m freestyle relay in two minutes and 17 seconds. The team's leading coach, Mr Gao Peng, won second prize for being an excellent coach in group A.

Training before the championship is very tiring, and the team members often encourage each other. After ongoing training, they gradually developed teamwork. According to Chen Peizhu, who represented UIC for the first time, training in the swimming team is also one way to relieve their study pressure. At least two training sessions per week allow them to relax and keep the right attitude for study.
Shadow Play
In the 9th Shenzhen Luohu Shadow Play Culture and Art Festival and the first Chinese Red Shadow Play Performance, the drama Marriage on Water: Where there is a country, there is a home brought by the students from UIC won two awards, namely, the Chinese Red Shadow Play Outstanding Drama Award and the Outstanding Performance Award. It is the first time for the team members, Zhang Jishu (fourth-year, Culture, Creativity and Management), Yu Haiping (third-year, Finance), Lu Siwen (first-year, Applied Translation Studies), Tang Hongyu (fourth-year, Culture, Creativity and Management), Tian Mingmin (third-year, Culture, Creativity and Management), Zhou Yiyi (first-year, Public Relations and Advertising) and Zhang Le (first-year, Data Science), to participate in a shadow play competition. Through preparation for the game, they all have deeper understandings toward this Chinese traditional art.

It took only about one month since the whole team heard the news to participate in the competition. The team members and the instructor, i.e., the Whole Person Education Office Xie Jinlin, used their spare time to make shadow puppets and conduct rehearsals. At the competition, Zhang Jishu found that the members of other teams are from all ages.
Zhang Jishiu explained how they realised what real passion means, and also they got to know that there are still some people working on it with persistence.
