UIC students competed in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) 2023 and China Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modelling (CUMCM) 2022, bringing home excellent results. A ceremony was held to present awards to student winners.

A total of 20 groups of students won awards in the MCM/ICM 2023, including three finalists, four first prizes and 13 second prizes. In the CUMCM 2022, 72 teams from UIC won 74 awards, including two national second prizes, three Guangdong first prizes, 10 Guangdong second prizes, 18 Guangdong third prizes, and 41 winning prizes.

UIC students bring home three finalist nominations

MCM/ICM is an international contest for high school students and college undergraduates, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and three other influential mathematical organisations. More than 20,000 teams participated in the contest this year.

UIC President, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences Prof Tang Tao congratulated the winners and said that mathematical modelling has a wide range of real-world applications, and attending competitions help cultivate students' practical and innovative abilities.

Associate Vice President (Internationalization), Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology Prof Pan Jianxin commended the students, adding that the competition was an excellent opportunity to apply what they learned and the experience would benefit their future development. He also expressed his appreciation to teachers for their hard work.

Student representatives were invited to share their experiences. They mentioned that students should utilise resources such as training and elective courses provided by the College, familiarise themselves with necessary tools, accumulate enough reading and knowledge of related fields, and emphasise the importance of communication, teamwork and the structure of papers.
