UStory | Six reasons to come to UIC

Published on 26 August 2024

In the journey of life, choosing a university is an important step that can shape one's future. For many students, UIC stands for a unique approach to education and a variety of opportunities. In this article, we share six stories of recent enrolments who have chosen UIC as their home for higher education.

Sister and brother become alumni

Wei Tao, graduating from Hohhot No.1 High School

After graduating, Wei Tao decided to follow the path of his sister, Wei Xiaoxia, who went to UIC to start her university life in the Statistics Programme in 2010.

Tao was familiar with his sister's growth stories. In September 2010, when the campus was still located on Jinfeng Road, Xiaoxia came to UIC. Learning and growing, with the knowledge she gained at school, she managed to enter a new phase of life in Hong Kong with her loved one.

Her experience in the Greater Bay Area as well as at UIC, kept painting bright colours to his imagination of his future. And now, in 2024, he walks into the new campus, steps on the Jintong Road, and is ready to pen his own stories as a first-year student of the Statistics Programme at UIC as his sister Xiaoxia had done 14 years ago.

Knowing, loving, and choosing it

Li Jiaxin, graduating from No.40 Senior High School Shenyang

Before entering UIC, Li Jiaxin used to study in Shenyang, a city in northeast China, and she is determined to travel across the country and spend her four years here.

Li knew about UIC from social media in middle school. Impressed by its international and interdisciplinary education, UIC became one of her dream schools. Following its trends closely, she won a UIC T-shirt from one of its live-streaming promotion events and wore it during a one-on-one consultation for programme application. With guidance from the professor, she was admitted to the Accounting Programme.

For her next step, Li plans to study hard and join in more community activities and sports, cultivate hobbies and interests, and grow comprehensively.

Come to dream school

Tu Suhao, graduating from Yizheng High School of Jiangsu Province

Tu Suhao and his family had their eyes on UIC for quite a long time. Its academic atmosphere, internationalised teaching, learning and multicultural environment have deeply attracted them. To Tu, he believes that UIC is a great platform to provide its students with great support. Finally, he was admitted by UIC's half Entrance Scholarship after graduating from high school.

Tu hopes to broaden his horizons at UIC, communicate with excellent teachers and classmates and achieve a better version of himself.

Care and respect

Duo Liyana, graduating from Wuhan No.2 High School

Duo Liyana is another UIC's half Entrance Scholarship winner. Unlike Tu, she had never learnt about UIC before Gaokao until an article introducing it attracted her attention: the strong cooperation between the two universities, liberal arts education, responsible faculty and staff...... all persuaded her to dial the admission consultation number.

UIC teacher's enthusiasm and attentiveness let Duo feel the school's humanistic care and respect. With one of the very few institutions in China to offer a programme in Business Analytics for undergraduates, she was able to finalise her first choice and came to UIC.

UIC, pathway to Hong Kong CPA

Huang Zizhou, graduating from High School Affiliated to SUSTech

Like many of his peers, Huang Zizhou was lost when facing the unknown and endless possibilities after high school life. When comparing and analysing multiple directions and majors, he gradually discovered the direction of his personal development to be an accountant and register as a Certified Public Accountant in Hong Kong someday.

Knowing that UIC's Accounting is the first major certified by the Hong Kong Institute of Accountants in the Chinese Mainland, it undoubtedly became his first choice of university, and was admitted with a full Entrance Scholarship.

Friendly professors for inspiring learning

Xuan Yiguo, graduating from Taiyuan Wuyu High School

UIC conducted many introductory meetings nationwide during the 2024 admissions season, and Xuan Yiguo attended one of them in Shanxi. "They are friendly and funny," when talking about professors from UIC, Xuan said, "and university professors should be like this in my mind."

Finally, the meeting brought him to UIC with a half Entrance Scholarship, and he is ready to absorb knowledge from the Computer Science and Technology Programme.

As they begin new chapters in their lives at UIC, we look forward to seeing how they write their own stories with their remarkable youth, enthusiasm, diligence and intelligence.

On the evening of 21 August 2024, UIC held a high-table dinner for parents of incoming students from the Class of 2028, and its president and professors gathered with parents for this special occasion. Before dinner, UIC President Prof Chen Zhi delivered a speech to the audience, introducing UIC's unique liberal arts education philosophy.

Around 200 parents attended this event. Reflecting on why their children chose UIC, they came up with multiple reasons for the College's roots in the Greater Bay Area and the positive future of further studies, its international platform with multicultural atmosphere providing diverse opportunities. In the end, achieving better growth remains a common pursuit shared by both parents and students.

"I hope my child can always be enthusiastic and passionate about life," said one of the parents, whose child is of the Financial Mathematics Programme, "and learn to be independent to face the future."
