UIC students placed third in CFA challenge

A UIC business student team achieved third place in the 2018-2019 CFA Institute Research Challenge South China Local Final that was held in Shenzhen on 24 February.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis.

A total of 34 teams from 24 universities participated in the South China competition. The UIC winning team, consisting of Yang Yezheng (Year 3 Finance), Fang Heyang (Year 3 Finance), Hao Yanling (Year 4 Finance), Tang Yu (Year 4 Applied Economics) and Yu Wenke (Year 4 Applied Economics), was advised by Dean of the Division of Business and Management (DBM) as well as the Programme Director of Finance, Dr Wu Minyu.

The UIC team competed against eight other teams from top universities including Peking University HSBC Business School; Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen; Southern University of Science and Technology; Wuhan University; and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

The contestants worked in teams to research and analyse a publicly traded company and then wrote a research report with a buy, sell or hold recommendation.

Prof Cho congratulated the students’ achievement, adding that this competition was rewarding, and the participating students “have improved their analytical skills in business and financial evaluation in addition to stock valuation.”

Team leader Yang Yezheng said that through this competition they were happy to see they improve themselves, and became in the judges’ words “Young and promising elites in finance”.
