The 2018 UIC graduates and their families attended the 59th Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Commencement on 17 November. The Bachelor’s Degrees were awarded to a total of 1220 graduates, with 125 receiving first class honours degrees, and 26 the Scholastic Awards.

‘Everyone is a talent’
With Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU Mr Cheng Yan Kee declaring the opening of the commencement, the students each took their turn to walk along the stage to excitedly collect their degrees.
HKBU President and Vice-Chancellor Prof Roland T Chin gave an address to the graduates, stressing that “Everyone is a talent”.
“Your talent needs to not be world-shaking, but it is your talent which makes you unique and exceptional,” Prof Chin said, adding that a whole-person, liberal arts education nurtures a huge diversity of talents and unleashes their full potential in whatever fields they choose to do.

Xie Yi, a graduate of the Culture, Creativity and Management programme, represented the Class of 2018 to deliver a valedictory speech.
She highlighted that “After four years of immersion in a Whole Person Education environment, I can say it is true that UIC is not only concerned with our attainment of a bachelor’s degree, but also our moral, physical, social, emotional, artistic, and spiritual development, which are encompassed by the UIC Graduate Attributes.”

After the closing of the Commencement, students filed outside to take a group photograph on the stairs, which was followed by a welcoming gathering.
In his speech, Mr Cheng Yan Kee congratulated the graduates on their achievements, pointing out their proud identity being a UIC and HKBU graduate.
UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai also spoke to the new graduates, encouraging them to keep their curiosity and develop a lifelong learning habit.

At the gathering, Statistics graduate Zhou Minda reminisced about the good old days at UIC and expressed his thanks to his alma mater, joking that his phone wallpaper was used to display his hectic class schedule.

Accounting graduate Zhang Yuchen is pursuing his Master’s degree in Science in Knowledge Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He said he was preparing for job applications and realised that UIC had equipped its students with strong presentation skills and team spirit.
