The New Students’ Welcoming Night, held by the Student Affairs Office (SAO) and the Student Union, offered students a feast of entertainment on the evening of 20 October in Hui Xian Village at UIC.

The Welcoming Night started at 7:00 p.m. President of UIC, Prof Ng Ching-Fai, expressed a warm welcome to new students during the opening speech. He encouraged the Year One students to take part in activities. He also mentioned that 2017 is a special year for UIC, because “The significance of the Welcoming Night is not only welcoming new students, but also the start of using the new campus.”
Afterwards, President Ng issued certificates to student volunteers who helped freshmen register and move into UIC. Certificates for star-rated interest clubs, as well as the Most Improved Award and the Best Popularity Award for 2016-2017 were also issued by Vice President Prof Zhang Cong.
The performances began afterwards with songs performed by the iMusic band and the BC band. There were performances from various student interest clubs and groups such as UIC48, the UIC Comics & Cosplay Union, the UIC Cheerleading Squad, the UIC Inspiration Dance Club and the UIC Crew. The UIC Taekwondo Club also displayed their abilities with a performance. The UIC Health Qigong Team, having just won a prize in a national competition, performed Chinese health Qigong.
New students also enjoyed taking part in the event. Year One students from the Foreign Language and Literature programme performed an interesting drama adapted from ‘Journey to the West’. Several other talented freshmen performed dances and songs.
At the end of the show, new students from Computer and Data Science sang ‘Look up at the Stars’ together, which concluded a perfect ending for the whole Welcoming Night.
