English Enhancement Programme is a success

Published on 19 September 2017

As the summer comes to a close and a new school year begins, Year Ones were the first to arrive at UIC to begin their studies for the semester. They started their time at UIC with an intensive English Enhancement Programme (EEP), which ran from 14-18 September.

The goal of the EEP is to help students quickly adapt to studying in an English learning environment. EEP focuses on four key skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The programme also introduces students to important campus resources such as the Learning Resource Centre, in addition to introducing them to Zhuhai itself.

Teachers use a variety of teaching strategies to coax new students to participate and have fun while practising their English. Students became more comfortable and confident with their English abilities after the five-day intensive programme. From speaking games to writing activities, students were challenged on the key English skills they will need to succeed in their time at UIC.

The five-day intensive programme was enjoyed by all, with students, teachers and foreign interns working tirelessly to make the introductory programme fun and successful week.

ELC Foreign Intern from the US, Jamie Siemsen, said “EEP introduced new students to an English speaking environment through a mix of activities, class discussions and lectures. The students impressed me with how well they did every day. I think I had more fun watching them making friends and becoming more comfortable with speaking English than they did participate!”

Students were able to take a lot from the EEP experience as well. Deng Jiaxuan, a Year One student from the Finance Programme, said “Before I came to EEP, in my eyes, learning English was so difficult. But when I joined EEP, I started to enjoy the subject more. Through this language, I can learn more about western culture, and meet new international friends.” It has been another successful year of EEP, and the students are now eager and ready to start their classes.
