The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC) and the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong (NSFG) released the result of funding applications in respective research areas, and UIC has been awarded a total of five grants from these agencies.
Adjunct Professor of the Division of Science and Technology (DST), Prof Cai Zongwei, and Dean of DST, Prof Stephen Chung, have been awarded a grand total of 640,000 RMB by the NSFC for their project titled Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Study on Liver Disease Induced by Triclosan and Its Metabolites. Assistant Professor of DST, Dr Chen Xiaoyi has also been awarded a grant of 280,000 RMB by the NSFC for his project titled Mathematical modelling and analysis of the non-Gaussian behaviour and instability of a spherical core-shell gel system. A third grant by the NSFC was awarded to Assistant Professor of DST, Dr Man Wa Hui, in the amount of 250,000 RMB for his project titled Characterizing and classifying ovoids in finite projective space.
From the NSSFC, Assistant Professor of the General Education Office, Dr Shawn Wang received a grant of 200,000 RMB for his work, Buddhist Manuscript Libraries in the History of Cultural Exchanges along the Silk Road. Lastly, Associate Professor of DST, Dr Amy Zhang, received 100,000 RMB from the NSFG for her project, Real-time 3D reconstruction with hand-held mobile devices.
These three agencies are significant research foundations for natural science and social science in China. The NSFC is the first-class found in the natural science area, which awarded three grants to UIC, one of the highest achievements of UIC in recent years. As the NSSFC is the most authoritative research funding agency in China, UIC is proud to have received a grant from them this year, which demonstrates the research strength of UIC on a national level.
UIC researchers have also won awards for their projects in the teaching studies area, as part of the University Innovation and Enhancement Programme in Guangdong province. Dr Shawn Wang was awarded funding from the Curriculum Innovation Project of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province for his project titled Exploration and Innovation of “World Religions” Courses at Sino-Foreign Colleges. Dr Dawn Tsang (Programme Director of Applied Translation Studies) also received funding from the Curriculum Innovation Project of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province for her project titled Optimization reform on the evaluation system for nurturing translation talents: to come up with the economic and cultural development under the “one belt, one road” policy. Additionally, from the Applied Talents Project of Guangdong, Dr Sherry Zhou (Programme Director of Financial Mathematics) received funding for her project titled Workshops of Quantitative Trading Simulation.
With the commencement of the 2017 cohort of students, in addition to the establishment of Graduate School for postgraduate studies, UIC will focus on the development of collaborative innovation centres. These innovation centres will be focused on: Statistics, Accounting, Applied Translation Studies, Finance, as well as English Language and Literature. Furthermore, the Internship Base of Data Science and Workshops of Cultural Creativity is under construction. Additionally, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS) will assist the faculty with applications for more research funding opportunities, such as the Social Science Fund of Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Quality Engineering Project, the Guangdong Teaching Innovation Project, the Zhuhai Higher Education Development Project and the Zhuhai Social Science Fund. These accomplishments are a key milestone, and UIC is keen to continue developing the area of Talent, Knowledge and Research to create a pathway to success.
The ORGS congratulates those who won grants for their work and wishes them success in their future endeavours along their research journey.
