Driving changes amid dynamics of accounting

Mabel Chan, President of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), gave a speech on the shooting dynamics of the accounting profession for DBM students at the High Table Dinner on 21 April.

Ms Chan elaborated her topic “The Changing Dynamics of Accounting” in six aspects: changing work environment, gender awareness, technological advancement, increasing global regulations, new Qualification Programme (QP), and exciting development – One Belt One Road.

“Today as many of you have come of age, you become one of the driving forces for change,” she said.

“UIC has long established an open culture with international perspectives, which is instrumental in advocating for equality and embracing differences.” She encouraged UIC students to lead changes especially in certain cultures or less developed countries.

She shared her own experiences and thoughts with the audience, suggesting that students should build up knowledge at university and develop soft skills such as leadership, communication and critical thinking.

After her speech, the HKICPA awarded QP scholarships to four Year Four DBM Accounting students for their outstanding performance this year. These recipients were Lin Yuming, Wang Ying, Wu Xuanzhen, and Zhong Bokang.

The audience were also entertained with musical performances by two students. Year Three student from the Applied Translation Studies Programme Feng Yuting sang “Wouldn’t It Be Lovely”, a musical number from “My Fair Lady”. The second performance was a Guzheng (Chinese zither) solo, “The Frangrant Jasmine”, which was delivered by Li Yuanxiang, a Year 3 student from the Finance Programme.

During the High Table Dinner, Year One Accounting student Xu Tao also gave a speech to show her sincere gratitude to mentors for the Mentor Caring Programme. “The most important thing that I learnt in my first year is how to be responsible, accountable and respectful,” she added.
