New campus marks topping out of three residence halls

A topping out ceremony celebrated completion of the roof of three dormitory buildings on the morning of 14 March. Top executives of UIC, representatives from the Student Hostel Council and construction units witnessed this significant moment of the second phase of UIC’s new campus construction.

The second phase includes eight blocks of student hostels, taking up 68,606 square metres that can accommodate 4,100 students. The celebration was for the three buildings blocks D1, D2 and D3. According to the head of the general contractor, Mr Wang Shengyong, it took the workers 58 days of effective effort.

Four more dormitory buildings will have their roofs built by the end of March, and the last roof is expected to be built by the middle of April.

In his address, UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai thanked the construction units for their hard work and their efficiency during this project, which he believed would come into use by next semester.

The representatives from the construction units also apologised to the students who live in the current six blocks of student hostels at the New Cultural Village, for the impact caused by the constructing.

Until now, the first building, Culture Creativity Centre, of the first phase has been done. Completion of the administration building, the university hall, the sports complex and other buildings are projected in the next two or three months.
