What is the sustainable design and how can it be achieved? WPE-Environmental Development Centre invited UIC alumnus Sherry Yue Su who is now an engineer in Building Sustainability to answer the question to an UIC audience during a guest talk on 25 March.

Her topic was “Built Environment in Building Sustainability Design”. Sherry explained that sustainable designs must follow authoritative systems such as LEED Version 3, China Three Star and BREEAM. These systems contain various standards in terms of location, energy, water, and material. For example, a sustainable design building should have enough open space, consume less energy, keep suitable humidity as well as use local construction materials. Sustainable designs should not only meet environmental protection requirements, but also make people in the building feel comfortable.
At work, Sherry negotiates with building owners to persuade them to spend money and time constructing environment-friendly facilities. In fact, in a long-term development, owners can make more profits or save more money.

Sherry also shared her experience on graduate study application and job hunting. She advised that the students should gradually find the direction that they would like to specify in during Year 3 according to their personal interests and abilities.
Dr Tsim Siu Tai, Associate Professor of Environmental Science as well as Coordinator of EDC, presided over the talk. During the discussion session, he imparted some learning skills as well as social experience to the audience.
