Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be vital to your business, according to Prof Edward Snape, Dean of the School of Business at Hong Kong Baptist University. At the 85th High Table Dinner on 4 November for the students of UIC’s Division of Business and Management, he spoke of why Socially Responsible Human Resource Management is important.
Prof Snape defined CSR as an approach to achieve sustainable development by delivering benefits to all the stakeholders. He argued that CSR was essential against the neoclassical thinking that CSR in a business was to serve the society by making profits.

His talk focused on CSR in human resource management (HRM). Prof Snape stated, “CSR in HRM can win employees commitment and make them more engaged. In the long term, the corporation can gain sustainability.” Corporations can achieve socially responsible HRM through treating employees ethically, providing equal opportunities and caring employees’ personal well-being.
He also applied some famous cases to illustrating his opinions, such as how socially irresponsible HRM led to Enron Corporation’s bankruptcy.
