
Scholars from universities in mainland China and Taiwan presented their thoughts on social policy and social quality at a conference at UIC on 30 March.
Prof Cherng-Tay James Hsueh from National Taiwan University spoke of how Taiwan developed social policies to combat social risks during the Global Financial Crisis. He analysed the demographic changes in Taiwan since 1950 and recent changes in family structure.

Prof Ka Lin from Zhejiang University evaluated social policy models in China from the life-social quality approach. He demonstrated the causes of model shift in accordance with the changed socio-economic contexts and political needs, and the social pressure caused by the institutional features and the tension of class relations.
