The New Student Hostels and Cultural Village (New SHCV) occupies around 45,000 m2. The first phase includes five residence halls accommodating 1800 students and is expected to be completed by January 2015. The second phase will be completed in the summer of 2015, and will have 1200 students.

The New SHCV will provide students with abundant facilities and supportive activities to enhance a “hall culture” residential experience, according to UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai. He hoped Year One students would understand the insufficient provision of amenities when they move to these new hostels next semester.

The New SHCV is cooperation among three parties: inhabitants of the Huitong Village who gave the land, the Zhiyu Investment Company who makes investment and development, and UIC who will rent the completed hostels.

Student representatives from the Student Union and the Student Hostel Council also visited the model hostel – a twin-room with a large window, a keycard door lock and large wardrobes. Every residence hall has a comfortable lobby, 24-hour self-study rooms, common rooms, laundries, and even a hanging garden on each two floors, says Mr James Cho, Director of New Campus Development Office.
