Ms Luyao WANG (left), Teaching Assistant at the Food Science and Technology Programme, marked a significant contribution to the establishment of international standards for artemisia argyi at the 5th plenary meeting of the the International Organisation for Standardisation Technical Committee of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ISO/TC249) in Kyoto, Japan in late May.

Ms Wang is registered with the ISO for her traditional Chinese medicine expertise. At the meeting, she proposed a new standard of artemisia argyi that was supervised by Prof Dingrong Wan with the South-Central University for Nationalities to representatives from Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, South Africa, South Korea and Thailand. With eight of them voting aye, Ms Wang and Prof Wan's presentation was passed and entered to the proposal stage.

Luyao believes the new ISO standard can identify the quality of artemisia argyi and qiai leaf (a type of artemisia argyi in Qizhou, China), ensure its medical efficacy and safety in healthcare products, and guarantee the profits of the planters, manufacturers, traders and consumers.
