UIC and China United Network Communications Co., Ltd. (Zhuhai) (China Unicom (Zhuhai)) signed a Collaborative Agreement to become strategic partners on 13 March.

The two sides will work together on communication services, product provision, resource sharing, cloud computing, and other research and development projects in creating a “smart campus” with mutual benefits for the college, student and staff users, the company, and the informatization of Zhuhai.

According to the agreement, China Unicom (Zhuhai) will offer internship opportunities to the most qualified students each year. The company will also provide scholarships to encourage students to excel in their studies.

To heighten information technology management on campus, China Unicom (Zhuhai) will provide UIC with a range of solutions for system deployment and operation, including Internet data centres (IDCs), hosting services, telecommunication services, a broadband network, platform technology, cloud computing, and other sponsorship programmes.

A new learning, research, and development industrial model of a cloud application database will be created for UIC, the company, and users to convert between innovations and research results.
In the meantime, student and staff users can compose, edit, and synchronize files and documents among multiple locations and devices on the cloud computing system maintained by China Unicom (Zhuhai). It is foreseen that UIC will eventually turn into a digitalized campus with a wireless, paperless and borderless teaching and office environment.

In August of last year, a Research and Development Finance Training Centre was inaugurated at the Hengqin Financial Industry Service Base. To enhance the development of the training base included in the agreement, UIC and China Unicom (Zhuhai) will establish a joint research centre in a short time. Together with China Unicom (Zhuhai), the college will explore new projects with marketing development prospects designed either by UIC graduates or by others.
UIC aims to become a world-class liberal arts university, and no liberal arts university should neglect the importance of research experiences, Prof. Ng said. China Unicom (Zhuhai) is an internationally known telecommunication corporation with advanced information technology. This new cooperation with the company will push forward the research and innovation agenda at UIC, he added.
