Prof. Stephen Cheung, Dean of Division of Business and Management of HKBU, visited UIC on November 24th. With attendance of Prof. Zee Sze Yong, Vice President of UIC, Dr. Wendy Chan, Associate Vice President of UIC, Prof. Stella Cho, Dean of DBM, and more than 100 students and teachers, a hot economic issue was presented and briefly analyze.
As a famous academic financial scholar, Prof. Stephen Cheung also holds many public positions. He is the chairman of Hong Kong Monetary Authority ABF Hong Kong Bond Index Fund Oversight Committee, and member of Strategic Development Committee of Hong Kong Government. In the year 2009, he was honored Bronze Bauhinia Star from Hong Kong Government.

“‘Wealth Gap’ is the very issue aroused in many developed countries and has drawn public attention of many economy experts. It’s also the problem keep bothering HK citizens in recent years.” said by Prof. Stella Cho, Dean of DBM, in the opening remark, “It’s our honor to invite Prof. Stephen Cheung to give us a speech on topic, and we can learn more on this common social issue through this talk.”

“What I’ve done before was making rich people richer,” said Prof. Cheung, “and in 2004 I started study in “Wealth Gap” started in 2004.” After a briefly introduction to characters of Hong Kong society, he described the current condition of polarization between the rich and the poor in Hong Kong society, and illustrated challenges and influences that caused by severe wealth gap, “General people appears to have hatred sentiments towards the rich. Actually, they are not simply hate wealth people, but oppose those dishonest ones grab money illegally,” said Prof. Cheung.

He then addressed that the vital elements of wealth accumulation in Hong Kong are capital and knowledge, thus the government should make more efforts to establish better education system to prevent the new generation from being illiterate and poor. “Meanwhile, companies should take their social responsibility to build up a fair and honest business environment,” he suggested. Moreover, Prof. Cheung explained the importance of governmental policy to solve this problem.

The lecture was gained positive response from UIC teachers and students. In the Q&A session, audience was actively raising questions. They had further discussion on wealth gap problem in mainland China and relevant governmental policy, public appeal, and effective solutions.
