Hong Kong Baptist University made the top 50 in the 2010 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Asian University Rankings issued on May 13. It ranked 45, which is 28 places higher than last year. Prof. NG Ching-Fai, President of HKBU, said he felt delighted at the news. Ranking was not the only criterion of appraisal for a university, he added, HKBU would continue its efforts in improving its service to the community.
The University of Hong Kong topped the list while The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The Chinese University of Hong Kong ranked second and fourth respectively. Among Mainland universities, Peking University ranked the highest at number 12th, and Tsinghua University and Fudan University ranked 16th and 24th.
The QS report said Hong Kong universities enjoyed higher level of internationalization, which permitted them to rank higher than Mainland universities. Six Hong Kong universities got full score in the internationalization of teaching staff, and four got full score in the internationalization of students.
Prof. NG Ching-Fai said: "As a matter of fact, teaching and research at HKBU has long been in keeping with international standard. Some of our research has achieved world fame, such as environmental protection, Chinese medicine, modern Chinese studies, cross-cultural studies, scientific computing, and statistics."
