Five UIC representative attended University Students Summit on Environmental Protection 2010

The University Students Summit on Environmental Protection (USSEP 2010) was held at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) from January 14th to 16th, 2010. The summit was orginesed by HKBU and sponsored by Heng Sheng Bank. Continuing the previous tradition, the summit was regarded as a significant activity of the HKBU Green Festival. HKBU specially invited students from Finland: TAMK University of Applied Sciences and Novia University of Applied Sciences. They enthusiastically joint the grand event together with the students from Hong Kong Baptist University, Beijing Normal University -Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), University of Macau and Chongqing University.

The opening ceremony took place on the afternoon of January 14. Guests officiating at the ceremony included Mr. Edward Yau, Secretary for the Environment, HKSAR, Mr. Daniel Cheng, President of Hong Kong Environmental Industry Association, Professor Ching-fai Ng, President of HKBU, Professor Jonathan Wong, Director of the Sino-Forest Applied Research Center for Pearl River Delta Environment, Dr. Thomas Chan, Head of China Business Center of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr. Sam Lau--Associate Head of the College of International Education of HKBU, Dr. Eddie Ho, Director of Student Affairs of HKBU, Dr. Cinne Ng, Associate Director of Student Affairs of HKBU and so on. Mr. Yau gave a speech titled How to build a low carbon City, which started a series of attractive speeches. In addition, Dr. Thomas Chan and Mr. Daniel Cheng shared information on environmental industry as well as environmental science and technology with the students.

The theme of the summit 2010 is "Green Industry". Each university representatives gave presentations on diverse perspectives on the green industry in their regions on the morning of January 15. UIC's five representatives gave a presentation based on three specific and typical cases: Eco-tour of mangrove wetland, recycle industry and clean energy, and another college student involvement case as well: the E-bag program of SIFE, showing an insight of their comprehension of Green Industry in Zhuhai from college students perspectives. All these cases sparked the interests of guests and participants.

Other university, like the extensive expertise of Nangyang Technological University students and the ‘zero footprint' paper industry in Finland left deep impressions on the audiences.

Apart from these, the organiser also arranged a variety of activities for the participants, including environmental-issue-based documentary videos screening and discussion, and visits on to sites: Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment recycling organisation and a used oil re-refinery factory of DUNWELL Enviro-Tech Ltd which was a highly representative of Hong Kong Environmental Protection Industry. Through different forms of studying, students understood the theme of the summit better.

The successful summit ended on the morning of January 16. Participants warmly communicated with each other about their own feelings of the summit at the closing ceremony. The representatives of each university and college announced a joint-regions declaration of USSEP 2010, which was drawn during the summit. They expected to apply the results of the summit to the actions in order to promote the development of the green industry and popularize the awareness of environment around the world.
