On October 22nd, associate director and chief editor working for Xinjiang Branch of Xinhua News Agency Mr. Xu Junwei delivered a speech in UIC. The speech titled "Discourse power in emergency news report" attracted more than two hundred students majoring in International Journalism. As a parent in UIC, Mr Xu shared his thoughts about news and extensive work experience with our students.

UIC Executive Vice-President Professor Kwok Siu Tong said, a Social Mentor Program is being promoted, which encouraged ardent celebrities to come to UIC for sharing experience. He said that Mr Xu's speech marked a good start of the program.
Considering the transitional period full of conflicts, Mr Xu emphasized the importance of competing for the power of discourse with two examples involving ethnic conflicts. In addition, he introduced the current condition in which the Chinese media were striving for international power of discourse and taught students how to win it.
After the speech, students were active in raising questions. One of them asked about the criteria for Xinhua News Agency to select and edit news. Mr Xu was pleased with students' positivity in the interaction. He stated that, students in UIC still lacked experience and needed more journalistic practice. He encouraged them to take the advantage of English writing based on national condition to improve individual competence.
The activity was designed mainly for students majoring in International Journalism to offer them professional guidance and widen their horizons.
