UIC Volunteers Serve in Zhuhai Environmental Hygiene Action

Published on 30 November 2007

UIC and the Zhuhai Hygiene Movement Committee joined hands to launch an environmental hygiene action on Nov. 25 with the theme "A Clean Zhuhai for A Green Olympic". Nearly 100 second year students of UIC participated in the action as part of their Whole Person Education voluntary service program.

The volunteers started their work at 1:00 PM. They divided into four groups to clean up the area around the Xiangzhou Bus Terminal, removing garbage from the flower beds, the sidewalks and the open square. They also carefully classified the garbage for recycling. Some passersby, affected by their earnestness, joined the action voluntarily.

About 3:30 PM, students arrived at the Xiangzhou Culture Square, where they put on a wonderful show to carry a message to fellow citizens- keep our city clean for the coming Olympics. They told the audience through their drama, recitation and singing how the environment was polluted in our daily life; how harmful the waste water and exhaust gas are; and how important it is for us to protect our environment. They appealed to the audience to replace the plastic bags with environmental friendly bags in daily shopping and reduce the use of disposable chopsticks.

It was the second time for UIC students to participate in environmental hygiene actions. The students believed that by taking small actions time and again, they could join in the endeavor to protect our environment just like the song Heal The World sings, "Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race..."

Voluntary Service is an important part of Whole Person Education, which advocates the volunteer spirit and the commitment to serve the community. Beside the environmental hygiene actions, students were organized to serve in orphanages, nursing homes, and factories.
