Enjoy Poem Translations by Diana Shi and George O'Connell of UIC

Published on 3 January 2008

A current edition of Words Without Borders, a U.S. online literary journal, has published 4 of Diana Shi and George O'Connell's English translations of poems by Xi Chuan, one of the most eminent living poets in China. Last semester, Xi Chuan was Poet-in-Residence at New York University, and read his work at Harvard and Brown Universities.

This issue of Words Without Borders is partly a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the University of Iowa's International Writing Program, the model for Hong Kong Baptist University's new "International Writers Workshop".  Christopher Merrill, Director of the Iowa International Writing Program, had invited Diana Shi and George O'Connell to translate the poems since Xi Chuan had been a participant in the IWP some years ago.  Christopher Merrill and Nieh Hua Ling, a former Iowa IWP Director, currently sit on the board of HKBU's program.

Please click on the following website and read the poems for your enjoyment. Beneath each of the four poems you may click on next title in the series.
