Dean Paul Hockings attended the International Symposium on Cultural Diversity and the Contemporary World, which also encompassed the 5th International Conference on Visual Anthropology, at Sun-Yat Sen University in Guangzhou.
The conference, held during Nov. 24-26, hosted over 500 delegates from Europe and China, and was intended to serve as a preliminary platform for the 15th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, a UNESCO-related venture which will be held in Kunming in 2008, and will bring several thousand anthropologists to China.
Dr. Hockings was able to give a paper and take part in much of the discussion at the International Conference on Visual Anthropology. The participants were particularly interested in hearing the background history of the journal, "Visual Anthropology", of which Dr. Hockings is Editor-in-Chief.
Also participating in the same conference were Prof. Asen Balikci, of the University of Montreal, and his daughter, Anna Balikci-Dongjengpan, who works at the Namgyal Research Institute in Sikkim and makes films in the Himalayas with her father. Both were guests at UIC during Nov. 29-30. Dr. Hockings's well-known book, "Principles of Visual Anthropology", will be appearing next year in a much-expanded second edition, in Chinese. It will be published by Yunnan University Press.
