Editor's note: Another year and another class of graduating students will say goodbye to their alma mater and start a new journey. The four years spent at UIC is some of the best years of their life. How many stories and sceneries have been treasured along the way? What does college mean to them? The following is the story of Finance graduate Hu Yu.
Recent graduate Hu Yu is from UIC’s Finance Programme of the Division of Business and Management. This delightful girl from Beijing has a contagious smile and a kind heart, as she loves to get involved in public service activities.
Hu Yu enjoyed a lot of UIC’s Whole Person Education (WPE) courses. She explains that students can choose what they are interested in among many fascinating and meaningful courses. One of the courses that she remembers the most is the Open Project voluntary service by Mr Yang Rongzhen. In this course, Hu Yu started to think differently about charity.

In her second summer vacation, Hu Yu registered in the Adream Coach Programme, which was jointly initiated by UIC and a non-profit organisation called Adream Foundation. This programme holds the values of public service and WPE, and trains teachers at beneficiary schools in instruction methodologies and empowers them to engage in local education reform.
Hu Yu followed the team to an elementary school in Xinjiang and delivered Whole Person Education and Liberal Arts Education via conversations with the teachers there. Through this experience, Hu Yu also have new understandings of Whole Person Education, that it trains students from inside out and is worth promoting in both elementary education and higher education.

Hu Yu decided to participate in the Adream Coach Programme again after her graduation this year. In the training session, she shared her experience with the volunteers and talked about her opinions of Whole Person Education, which touched their hearts. Due to the pandemic, the Programme has been carried out online, and Hu Yu has been working on improving online teaching.
Recalling her four years at UIC, Hu Yu describes it as an opportunity to rediscover, develop and improve herself. She highlighted that she will keep paying attention to public well-being and put in efforts as much as she could.
