[People of UIC] Meet Zhang Yixuan: Turning love for games into a career at Alibaba

Published on 13 May 2021

In recent years, more leading internet enterprises have settled in Pazhou in Guangzhou, including Alibaba South China Operation Centre. Zhang Yixuan, a Computer Science and Technology Programme student, will join Alibaba and pursue the career that he loves after graduating from UIC this summer.

Yixuan mentioned that his favourite thing about UIC is that there was no absolute definition for success and no limits for students' development. In the first two years of college, Yixuan tried various new things to explore. He has borrowed almost all the books about Taoism in the Learning Resource Centre and has accumulated knowledge in music theory, art appreciation and other fields through free elective courses. Then in the last two years, he focused his limited time and energy on the area he loved and made clear his goals.

Yixuan's Final Year Project was creating a game about inscriptions on oracle bones. To better present the research results, he devoted a long time to the textual research of the history of the Shang Dynasty, the classification of inscriptions on oracle bones, etc. He hopes that players can identify the cultural connotation and the internal relationship between culture and daily life after playing the game. Later, during his internship at Alibaba, he raised his thoughts for creating a new game and was highly supported and encouraged by his supervisors, and thus, he decided to join Alibaba after graduation.

For the industry to be entered, Yixuan has already made preliminary plans: to firm basic skills and familiarise himself with the operation principle of game engineering. He believes that only in this way can he move forward step by step and finally make the game he wants to create.

Zhang Yixuan has a wide range of hobbies

Yixuan also gave his own suggestions for students who want to go for a career directly. Given the gradual refinement of industries in current society, he believes that one shall identify the field he would like to be devoted to as soon as possible. Yixuan suggests that the students can then comprehensively investigate the industry requirements and the targeted enterprises. He also hopes that students can smoothly turn their passion into careers and discover their own talents in complex fields.
