2025年6月8日，北师香港浸会大学（BNBU）举办第十七届毕业典礼暨荣誉院士颁授典礼，授予五位杰出人士荣誉院士荣衔。典礼上，美国著名汉学家、威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校荣休讲座教授倪豪士（William H. Nienhauser, Jr.）教授作为荣誉院士代表致谢辞。

致辞全文
Prof Chen Zhi, President of Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University, distinguished Honorary Fellows, faculty members, graduates, and friends,
I am extremely honoured and humble to be standing here alongside such distinguished scholars. I’m also grateful that I can participate in both your graduation, as well as the 20th anniversary of the cooperation between Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University. I would like to thank the organisers for providing me with the draft of these comments, but I hope they will allow me to divert somewhat from that draft.
When I referred to distinguished scholars on this stage, I include Professor and President Chen Zhi, who was introduced to me by my wife, Judith, and became my student, then a colleague and finally a friend, an inspiration, for, I think we just figured it out, 35 years. As a student at the University of Wisconsin, I suppose Chen Zhi learned a few things from me, but he also taught me many things. He was already a promising young scholar. We’ve had some fun together as well. He has a good sense of humour and a great voice. I’m glad I don’t have to speak after him, because I can’t match that.
I was elated to receive his gracious invitation to visit with him and to join the academic community in Zhuhai today. I’m convinced that any undertaking which involves President Chen, will not only succeed, but also endure. Just as this joint venture between Beijing Normal and Hong Kong Baptist universities has endured.
To my distinguished Honorary Fellows: Prof Aumann, Prof Chen, Ms Pan, and Dr Suen, I can say that your presence just simply graces this celebration. I’m honoured to be with you today. As we contemplate your ground-breaking contributions across amazingly diverse fields, your life’s work embodies the truth that excellence, when paired with purpose, transcends all boundaries.
The 20-year-link journey of Beijing Normal and Hong Kong Baptist universities also demonstrates the power of innovation. From its beginnings as UIC to its current success, the university has stayed true to the best values of liberal education: developing curious minds, responsible leaders, and global citizens. Nearly 20,000 graduates now carry forward this tradition: professionals known for their skills, their character, their understanding of China, and their ability to contribute to the global community.
I should like to congratulate also the Class of 2025. As we hear on stage and those throughout the rest of the world look forward to seeing, you will help build an even better place for future generations to live.
In accepting this fellowship, I see it not just as an honour for me, but as an opportunity to support, in some small way, the long journey of Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University. May the next twenty years bring even greater achievements, guided by the same spirit of inquiry, courage, and cultural exchange that defines this special community.
