HONG KONG – The United International College (UIC), a joint venture university in Zhuhai, could contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, according to the central government’s top liaison official in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
As the first university jointly established by the mainland and Hong Kong, Wang said UIC is a model of mainland-overseas cooperation
Having become a “famous brand” of Zhuhai with abundant education resources, UIC should leverage its advantages to attract high-calibre talents to both the college and the city, said Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, during a visit to the institution.
Established in 2005, UIC was cofounded by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University, with teaching staff from more than 30 countries and regions.
As the first university jointly established by the mainland and Hong Kong, Wang said UIC is a model of mainland-overseas cooperation.
UIC president Tang Tao, while briefing Wang the institution’s development plan, said international partnership would be one of the university’s focuses, in an echo to the liaison chief’s remarks.

Wang met with Hong Kong students and staff at the Ceramics Studio. He listened to an applied psychology graduate talk about how he and his fellow students from the mainland created a work space sharing business that has expanded from Zhuhai to Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Their business was estimated to be valued at 1 billion yuan in recent financing.
Wang said the Bay Area has opened up tremendous opportunities of education, employment and business for young people, calling on students to fulfil their potential and return to work in the Bay Area upon graduation.
Wang also toured the learning resource center and praised innovative designs there, such as RFID smart bookshelves, self-check units and a book sanitizer.
UIC is home to over 6,000 undergraduates and postgraduates. In recent years, 70 percent of the graduates have opted to go to Hong Kong and abroad to further their studies. Around 100 staff are from Hong Kong.
