Four disciplines of UIC have received sponsorship as Guangdong Provincial key disciplines, including Statistics, Computer Science and Technology, Mathematics, and Communication Studies.
Statistics
UIC's Statistics was rated as an excellent subject of Zhuhai in 2015 and the first-class undergraduate programme of Guangdong province in 2020. In addition, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to recruit master's and doctor's degree students in probability theory and Mathematical Statistics in 2016. It also got approval from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2021 to recruit master's and doctor's students independently.
The Statistics subject serves the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). It develops cross-application research related to statistics in three directions: biostatistics and healthcare, experimental design and intelligent manufacturing, and financial statistics big data. It is led by Dean of the Division of Science and Technology (DST) and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society Prof Pan Jianxin, Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) and the American Statistical Association (ASA), and Chair Professor of DST Prof Fang Kai-Tai, and Associate Professor of DST Dr Liang Jiajuan.

Computer Science and Technology
The Computer Science and Technology (CST) discipline has achieved remarkable results with its 16-year development. In 2016, it obtained the right to grant doctoral degrees. In 2017, it was rated as the Key Discipline of Guangdong Province. In 2020, its laboratory was selected as the Key Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Multi-Modal Data Processing of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province.
The CST subject focuses on three directions, Artificial intelligence and multimodal data processing, Industrial Internet of Things and intelligent systems, and Intelligent visual interaction and image detection. The three directions are respectively led by: Vice President (Research and Development) of UIC and Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Prof Jia Weijia, Academician of South African National Academy of Sciences and Chair Professor of DST Prof Wang Qing-Guo, and Director of the CST Programme Prof Zhang Hui.

UIC's CST subject is equipped with seven laboratories and two research institutes. The institutes include the BNU-UIC Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Future Networks in cooperation and The Artificial Intelligence and Data Institute (AIDI) at UIC, which creates excellent support for the research development of the CST Programme.

Mathematics
The mathematics disciplines aim to cultivate outstanding mathematics talents with a global vision. In 2021, UIC was approved to offer the master of philosophy and doctoral degree programmes in Mathematics.
Led by UIC's President Prof Tang Tao, Associate Dean of DST Prof Sun Weiwei, and Professor of DST Prof Zhang Qiang, the mathematics subject involves scientific and engineering computing, applied partial differential equations, and financial mathematics.

Communication Studies
The Communication Studies discipline aims to cultivate cultural communicators who understand Chinese culture and have an international academic perspective, with excellent communication skills in Chinese and English.
The subject involves three directions, Chinese Culture and Global Communication, studies on Communication theories, and studies on Communication practice. It is led by UIC's Provost Prof Chen Zhi, with a team of leading scholars: Director of Chinese Culture and Global Communication (CCGC) Programme Prof Tze Ki Hon, Associate Professor of Media and Communication Studies (MCOM) Programme Dr Edgar Yuen, and Dean of Division of Culture and Creativity (DCC) Prof Holger Briel.
