President Tang Tao's New Year message to staff and students 2022

Published on 1 January 2022

Dear Colleagues and Students,

As we usher in the New Year, I look back with gratitude for what we have achieved together in the past twelve months.

2021 has been kind to us, as we grow in size and stature. We have become bigger and better. Numerically, we are attracting more students to our international and multicultural education, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Physically, shovel work has begun on the construction of the Second Phase of our campus.

UIC’s reputation has grown with each passing year. We have been designated by the government as one of the universities for receiving students destined to leading overseas universities but are stranded by the pandemic. We are part of the Guangdong Province high-level university development scheme. Four of our disciplines, namely Statistics, Mathematics, Communication Studies plus Computer Science and Technology have been recognized as Guangdong Provincial Key Disciplines and ten of our scholars are rated in the top 2% of world scientists.

As a liberal arts university, the backbone of our reputation is the quality of our teaching and learning. In recent years, we have introduced cross-disciplinary collaboration in teaching and research, with exciting cross-fertilizations in both areas.

Our administrative staff have performed brilliantly in coping with the ever-changing challenges of the pandemic to keep our campus safe and our people healthy, making in-person teaching possible.

For that, I owe all our staff a vote of gratitude.

To our students, know this: we never forget you are the reason for our existence. Our mission is to give you an education you and your parents can be proud of, in a relentless chase of academic excellence.

As we say goodbye to 2021, may I wish each and every one of you a very happy New Year rich in blessings. And please stay safe.

Sincerely,

Tang Tao

President, UIC

Member, Chinese Academy of Sciences
