Highlighting moments: Roundup of UIC 2021

The year 2021 has witnessed UIC steadily en route to becoming a first-class liberal arts college. Here are the remarkable achievements of UIC in 2021.

UIC held its second-phase campus groundbreaking ceremony on 23 May. The second-phase campus will be home to science programmes and Graduate School. As the first modern college in China that upholds a liberal arts education, UIC continues fostering high-quality talents to help develop the Greater Bay Area and China and serve the world. (Click here to read more)

The College has made the list of Guangdong's high-level university development plan. Four disciplines have received sponsorship as provincial key disciplines, including Statistics, Computer Science and Technology, Mathematics, and Communication Studies. (Click here to read more)

In addition, since 2020, three UIC undergraduate programmes have been rated the provincial first-class programmes by the Department of Education of Guangdong. They have been Applied Economics, Computer Science and Technology, and Statistics. (Click here to read more)

In terms of faculty accomplishments, ten UIC scholars have been selected for the World's Top 2% Scientists list released and updated by Stanford University scholars. (Click here to read more)

The Cooperative Universities Symposium was held at UIC on 13 May, with the theme of "Cultivating Talents for the State: The Strategic Role of Cooperative Universities in the New Era". Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of Ministry of Education, Ms Liu Jin, said that cooperative universities had become vital forces in cultivating talents in the new era. The 6th International Symposium on Emerging Technologies for Education (SETE 2021) and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Artificial Intelligence Summit Forum was held in Zhuhai on 11 November 2021. The high standard international academic conference attracted over 300 participants, including scholars and experts from home and overseas, and representatives from public and private sectors. UIC has gained broad media exposure over the past year. In January, China Daily Hong Kong edition presented a full-page feature story on UIC's development, titled Always up for a Challenge. In November, Guangdong TV station broadcasted a close-up of UIC's Liberal Arts Education in the special series about the province's educational development. (Click here to read more)

UIC has added new undergraduate programmes in the 2021-2022 academic year, including Artificial Intelligence; Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management; Animation and Interactive Media; as well as Chinese Culture and Global Communication. Furthermore, the MPhil/PhD Programme of Applied Mathematics has been launched. (Click here to read more)

UIC held the 2021 Comprehensive Evaluation Admission Examination for Guangdong Province on 19 and 20 June. A record high of more than 5,000 candidates applied this year. (Click here to read more)

Despite the negative impact on employment due to the Covid-19 pandemic, nearly 70% of UIC's class of 2021 opted for postgraduate studies in the world's top higher educational institutions, including Imperial College London, University College London, National University of Singapore, and Yale University. In addition, some of the graduates received full scholarships to study PhD programmes in prestigious universities such as the University of Oxford. (Click here to read more)
