UIC holds inauguration ceremonies for new undergraduates and postgraduates

UIC held inauguration ceremonies for new students, including undergraduate and postgraduate students at the beginning of September 2023.

The inauguration ceremonies for the new undergraduate students were held on 9 September 2023, with more than 2,000 attending.

UIC President, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences Prof Tang Tao delivered a speech, saying that UIC has reached 18 this year and expected to keep growing with them. He also hoped students would take chances provided by UIC to practise their skills intellectually, interpersonally and physically and be critical and curious about the world in the era of AI.

UIC Provost Patrick Chau mentioned in his speech that UIC focuses on international education to help students broaden their horizons in the time of globalisation. He also encouraged them to read, learn and participate in activities to cultivate their personalities and abilities.

UIC Party Secretary of the College Party Committee and Vice President (Administration) Prof Mao Yaqing welcomed the new students and emphasised the importance of all-round development, and hoped they would participate in campus activities actively, exercise regularly and care about domestic and international events.

At the ceremony, 12 first-year students from Guangdong, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Hebei, Chongqing and Xinjiang were awarded full Admission Scholarships. Full Scholarship for International Degree-seeking Students were presented to three students from Russia and Kazakhstan.

UIC's newly admitted taught postgraduate students had their inauguration ceremonies on 7 September 2023. Nearly 30% of them are fresh graduates with bachelor's degrees coming from renowned institutions at home and abroad. Additionally, many new students are from media-related industries.

UIC's taught postgraduate programme combines the strengths and features of both Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and UIC, with the participation of renowned teachers from the two universities. Graduates will be awarded a Master's degree from HKBU.

Prof Tang placed great expectations on the students at the ceremonies. He said that postgraduate education formed an important part of UIC's academic construction and innovative talent cultivation, and UIC would continue to strive to provide internationally high-level platforms and resources for students in the future.

Senior Advisor to HKBU's President Prof Huang Yu introduced the new students to the School of Communication of HKBU and hoped they would gain rich knowledge during their study.

UIC Vice President (Research and Development), Dean of Graduate School Prof Jia Weijia wished the students not only to acquire professional knowledge, but also to set up the correct values and drill down to their research field.

The Interim Dean of HKBU's School of Communication Prof Steve Guo urged students to cultivate critical thinking and to be clear-minded when facing technologies, ethics of science and technology, as well as social responsibilities.

Assistant to President, Administration Director of UIC's Graduate School Ms Ashura Lam said that UIC promotes students to achieve ideal learning outcomes by creating a warm and friendly campus atmosphere.

Later, the students were arranged to meet the faculty members of their programmes.
