UIC students excelled in a provincial English speech contest, winning seven gold awards this past weekend, and eight of them will represent Guangdong in the national finals.
The contest held at UIC on 10 November 2024 was the provincial semi-final for Guangdong of the 2024 "FLTRP·ETIC Cup" "Understanding Contemporary China" National Foreign Language Proficiency Contest for College Students, attracting approximately 50,000 contestants from 69 universities in Guangdong Province.

It was guided by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, the Advisory Board for Guangdong Undergraduate Foreign Language and Literature Teaching, the Advisory Board for Guangdong College Foreign Language Teaching, and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and hosted by UIC.
UIC Academic Registrar Prof Li Jianhui addressed the participants at the opening ceremony. He hoped that more high-level international talents with national sentiments and global vision could be cultivated through the contest to construct a community with a shared future for humanity.

The Secretary General of the Advisory Board for Guangdong College Foreign Language Teaching and the Vice President of the Faculty of English Language and Culture of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies Prof Wu Zhuang, said that Guangdong is a highland for foreign language education and talent cultivation, and he hoped the contestants could shoulder the historical mission of inheriting Chinese culture and spreading the voice of China.

This year's contest was comprehensively upgraded in categories, including International Communication Comprehensive Ability, Translation, Interpretation and Short Video. In all fields, UIC students excelled.
During the first category, which consisted of a Comprehensive Abilities Competition and a Public Speaking Competition, three UIC students advanced to the national finals; in the Comprehensive Abilities session, two students won gold awards; and in the Public Speaking session, one UIC student was ranked first at the provincial level, and three won the gold awards.

Moreover, one UIC student brought home the gold award for the Translation category and advanced to the national finals, and two UIC student teams got recognised with a gold award and a silver award, respectively, in the Short Video contest.

The UIC students said they enjoyed their time on stage and appreciated the learning experience. They appreciated the contest for fostering confidence, perseverance, and English skills and looked forward to the national contest as a learning opportunity.
Regarding the contest, the Secretary General of the Advisory Board for Guangdong Undergraduate Foreign Language and Literature Teaching Prof Chen Jinshi praised the contest's talented participants and their brilliant performances. The event showcased educational effectiveness and tested comprehensive foreign language skills.

Acting Dean of UIC's School of General Education Prof Guo Haipeng, said that as a university with an English-teaching environment, UIC was delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to the development and innovation of foreign language teaching in Guangdong.

Ms Liu Qiuxiang of FLTRP and Director of Guangdong Information Centre, pointed out that the contest, promoting educational reform and innovative curriculum, aimed to boost China's independent cultivation of global communication talents, foster better global integration, and enhance worldwide understanding of China.
