Future of cooperative education: Insights, challenges, and innovations

UIC hosted the 4th Annual Conference & University Presidents Forum Branch for Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools Guangdong Association of Higher Education on 14 December 2024, bringing together 24 universities. The event aimed to advance high-quality Chinese-Foreign cooperative education in the Greater Bay Area to align with national development goals, explore future prospects, and share key reports.

The Chairman of the China Education Association for International Exchange and former Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges under the Ministry of Education, Mr Fang Jun, delivered a speech on cooperation in the new era. He pointed out that in recent years, Chinese-Foreign cooperative education has achieved good results. He shared his insights on further improving its quality and level in the current international context.

Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of Hong Kong Baptist University, Dr Albert Chau, shared his insights on cultivating future students from the perspective of interdisciplinary education, and Hong Kong Baptist University is striving to promote interdisciplinary education.

UIC President Prof Chen Zhi discussed the global trends and challenges of future education, as well as the value of liberal arts education. He stated that nowadays, liberal arts education has flexible adaptability by breaking the boundaries of specialisations and emphasising the integration of arts and sciences.

Vice Chancellor for Government Affairs of Duke Kunshan University, Prof Cai Hongtao, shared how artificial intelligence empowers cooperative education. He pointed out that artificial intelligence is reshaping educational goals and philosophies, transforming the roles and functions of teachers, and also changing the methods and assessment mechanisms of student learning.

Deputy Secretary of CPC Committee of the Wenzhou-Kean University, Prof Yan Xiaopeng, presented a report on the current development and direction of Sino-US cooperative education in the new era, pointing out the need to actively develop cooperation, carry out cultural exchanges, and establish risk and early warning mechanisms to deal with uncertainties.

Vice President (Academic) of City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan), Prof Li Juan, introduced the university's talent cultivation plan that emphasises exploration and innovation.

The event also provided opportunities for educational experts and scholars to share their explorations, insights, and practices in Sino-foreign cooperative education and other related topics.

Chao Guiming, Deputy Mayor of Zhuhai Municipal People's Government highlighted the city's commitment to higher education and international openness, aiming to create a talent hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.


Wang Huijing, Director of the Exchange and Cooperation Department of the Education Department of Guangdong Province, discussed the province's leading role in cooperative education, with plans to enhance its quality and level.


Liao Yi, Vice President of the Guangdong Association of Higher Education expressed hopes for the forum to pioneer new international educational exchange models, contributing to Guangdong's educational reform and development.


UIC Vice President (Academic) and Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Study, Prof Zhou Yongming, said that the forum, focusing on key topics like enhancing educational quality and innovating management mechanisms, served as a bridge connecting the world, facing new challenges and opportunities in the wave of modern education.
