VP Huang Huaxiong's Applied Mathematics career inspires students

Prof Huang Huaxiong, UIC’s Vice President (Academic) and Chair Professor, talked about his career experience in Applied Mathematics to students on 9 March.

Prof Huang shared his views on the professional development of Applied Mathematics, introducing the application of mathematics in various fields, including Machine Learning, biology, physics, medicine, and economics. A new model of interdisciplinary research was also discussed.

Applied Economics student Wang Yi said that Prof Huang broadened their horizons in mathematics, helping them realise the significant contributions of applied mathematicians to social development.

Liao Yunzi, a year-two student majoring in Financial Mathematics, said the lecture deepened her understanding of this new major closely related to finance and programming. “Applied mathematics doesn’t have to be boring; it can be fun,” said Liao.

Prof Huang’s path to Applied Mathematics also inspired year-one Finance student Liang Ketong, who admired Prof Huang’s diligence throughout his long journey to become an applied mathematician.
