UIC has been approved to establish the “Mathematics Basic Discipline Top Talent Cultivation Innovation Experiment Zone” by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province. Based on the “Mathematics + N” model of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and led by UIC Vice President (Research and Development) Prof Pan Jianxin, the project combines mathematics with related disciplines including statistics, data science, and computer science.
The establishment of the Zone signifies that UIC has been recognised as the first-tier higher education institution in Guangdong with its teaching quality and research strength of the basic disciplines, and it will enhance UIC's core advantages in mathematics and provide a suitable learning environment to cultivate top talents with innovative abilities.
A total of 42 experimental zones have been approved for colleges and universities across the province, with UIC being the only cooperative institution selected. Among them are seven universities, including UIC, submitted their applications with mathematics as a basic subject, and they are Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou University, Shenzhen University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology (Zhuhai), and Shantou University.
