Professor on China's economic success

Published on 21 December 2020

UIC Registrar Professor Li Jianhui delivered a lecture on 9 December centring on the theme of China's success and learning from remarks made by President Xi Jinping during his visit to Shenzhen. Prof Li Jianhui talks to students about the Chinese road and interprets the significance and value of the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Prof Li Jianhui is introducing "Chinese Miracle"

Prof Li first introduced "Chinese Miracle" through two examples: "Shenzhen Miracle" and "Pudong Miracle". "Shenzhen Miracle" refers to the fact that the regional GDP has increased from 270 million yuan in 1980 to 2.7 trillion yuan in 2019, with an average annual growth rate of 20.7%. Its economic growth ranks the fifth among Asian cities, realising a historic leap from a border town to an international metropolis with global influence. "Pudong Miracle" is reflected in the leap-forward development of its economy. The "Pudong Miracle" has created 1/80 of the country's GDP and 1/15 of the total import-export volume in an area of 1/8000.

Prof Wu Hongyu is introducing the main speaker

Prof Li further addressed that these two miracles are mainly manifested into two aspects: first, the rapid economic development; second, long-term social stability. Since the reform and opening-up, China's economy has maintained a steady and medium-high growth rate for a long time. The average annual growth rate of China's GDP has long been at the forefront of the world. These are unprecedented achievements in the history of world economic development. The proportion of China's GDP in the world economy has also increased from less than 2% in 1978 to about 15%, realising the incredible transformation from a backward agricultural country to a manufacturing and industrial country, therefore creating one of the most significant economic developments in human history.
