Finding comfort and independence at UIC

Published on 7 October 2021

For many new students, UIC is their first taste of independence. It is not always easy, but the experience can be massively rewarding. The following accounts were written by students about their several weeks at UIC.

Chen Lifan

Until today, I have been living in UIC for nearly a month. When I came to school on the first day, I was deeply attracted by UIC. The scenery of the UIC was magnificent, and the buildings were very artistic. I was full of expectations for the next four years of UIC study and life.

In UIC, every day is full but meaningful. We have many exciting classes, the teachers are very enthusiastic, and the students are very active in answering the questions. I took the courses at UIC to learn professional knowledge and cultivate my curiosity and interest in the major. Although learning professional knowledge is complex, the English environment and teaching in English is also a challenge for me. I’m still having fun in it and tackling the problem. I want to challenge myself.

After class, I like to go to the gym with my friends and exercise. After that, we all like having dinner together and walk around the campus after dinner. Walking inside the beautiful campus, with a comfortable evening wind blowing, helps me to relax. I like to play the piano in the college’s piano room near the lake in my spare time—playing in an elegant environment. It is like a dialogue with Beethoven and Chopin that let my heart accept the baptism of music. Maybe this is the life that I’ve always wanted.

In UIC, besides study, club activities are also indispensable.UIC has many interest clubs that often holds a variety of colourful activities. It’s a benefit for us to relax and enrich our campus life. And it gives us some opportunities to broaden our horizons. For me, club activities are just like a spice of life, which adds a bright colour to my busy and dull life.

My college life has just begun, and my story with UIC is still going on. I will have four years to record my daily life in UIC. I hope to improve myself comprehensively in the four years at UIC and spend every day seriously. I will grow up with UIC in the next four years.

Yu Dengjin

My name is Yu Dengjin, and I come from Liaoning Dalian, in the northeast region of China. I love to play the guitar, and I also produce some songs during my free time. I love Manchester United football club, so I played for my high school football team. And I’m a Journalism and Communications (JC) student. I heard that JC in UIC is a great major with a high employment rate, and that’s why I chose UIC.

Generally speaking, the first week of my college life has been relatively easy for me. Each teacher has given me a big surprise, all of whom have pretty high academic achievements. They treated me differently, not just as a student but as an adult.

The teacher who impressed me most was Dr Tang Xiaofei, my teacher from the English Language Centre (ELC). The reason is simple, just because she called my name the most. As a Journalism and Communications major, most of my classmates are girls, so when we had a group discussion, I was a little bit shy to cut in. So at that time, Dr Tang came to me and had a conversation with me, and I just felt like being saved. Honestly, she is very kind and very good at being a friend with students.

Even though I had a good time, but my college life is not all sunshine. Maybe my university life is full of happiness, but I gained weight without realising it. Besides, I also got three roommates, all of whom like playing computer games. To my disappointment, we don’t have much in common. Maybe the only one is that we all enjoy staying up late and getting up late.

During my free time, I will spend it at UIC’s campus. It’s a modern university, with a gorgeous lake in the centre. It is said that there are some black swans in the lake, but I have never seen them. On the campus, there are many restaurants but located far from my dormitory, so I order take-out instead. Maybe that’s why I got fat. Although our college is beautiful, it’s far from the downtown, which is inconvenient. However, on the whole, it’s a great place to study.

Honestly, I spent most of my time staying in bed during my first week at UIC but, I did find the time to go to the gym to play badminton with my friends. We had a perfect time.

This was my first week in school, and I think it will be harder next week. So I’m looking forward to that as I believe it will be pretty interesting.

Zhang Ling

My name is Zhang Ling. I am a freshman majoring in Applied Psychology. I never knew UIC before the college entrance examination. It is my father who let me know about this university with good teaching and a beautiful environment. By watching news and movies and reading books outside, I desire to go abroad to see the outside world, learn more new things and make more friends.

The main reason why I choose UIC is that it has an intense academic atmosphere. The teacher is responsible for classroom interaction. There are many opportunities for me to practice my learning. I believe that my speaking English skills and writing skills will significantly improve after studying at UIC. I want to be proud of my parents and make contributions to society.

I already know most of the people on campus. College life is different from high school. The time is relatively free, I have three days of the reasonable period each week, but unfortunately, I can't sleep in or take a nap. Moreover, I didn't expect that there would be only ten minutes between my English class and the gym on Wednesday. Therefore, I have to run between the teaching building and the gym every Wednesday morning.

Just a few days ago, I joined the roller-skating club. So many students like to play skateboard to learn together. Here, I made many new friends and felt the beauty of playing with everyone. I hope my skateboarding skills can get better and better to shuttle freely in the school.
